Sofitel Wanda Beijing’s Le Pre Lenotre French Gastronomic Restaurant is proud to host a cuisine event centered on the savoir-faire of Rene Meilleur, the two-Michelin Star chef of La Bouitte restaurant in Saint Martin de Belleville, France.
It is Meilleur’s first trip to China. He will bring to Beijing his signature dish, “duck liver cutlet on a corn cake and acacia honey”, which he has served for years at La Bouitte.
“I think it will be popular in the China market, as the taste is a mix of saltiness and sweetness, which is often used in Chinese cuisine,” he says.
Meilleur’s fascination with food began at age 14, when he lived at a ski resort. While many of his friends became ski instructors, he was drawn to the kitchen, he says. He became a chef de cuisine at age 23. He bought the land for his restaurant in his hometown Saint Marcel in 1975.
Meilleur started out offering local specialties, such as fonudes and raclette. But he was ultimately aiming for another type of cuisine, such as the gastronomy he discovered in Paul Bocuse Restaurant in 1980. Following his instinct to create a more refined gourmet cuisine paid off. He won La Cle D’or by the Gault Millau in 2000, one Michelin Star in 2003 and another in 2008.

A total of 500 ethnic minority teachers from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region will be dispatched to universities in inland China for a one-year training program that is designed to train more bilingual teachers and boost educational quality in the region, according to regional educational authorities. In addition, 225 of the region’s Chinese teachers, along with 60 elementary and secondary school headmasters, have been sent to universities in the municipalities of Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, as well as Jiangsu Province, for the purpose of undergoing training or taking up temporary posts in elementary and secondary schools, according to the region’s education department.

Singapore government on Wednesday started public consultations to get feedback on climate change issues that will possibly feed into its national climate change strategy.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean kicked off the process on Wednesday that will eventually lead to the release of the national climate change strategy by the mid-2012.
It will elaborate on Singapore’s sustainable development strategy, and how the country intends to meet the target to reduce emissions by 7 percent to 11 percent, below the business-as-usual level in 2020.
Teo said the document, due out next year, will be an important foundation to the long-term strategy.

A “reptile cafe” allowing customers to observe exotic creatures while sipping Chinese tea has opened in Yokohama, the latest among a growing number of such establishments featuring animals.
At the Reptile Cafe/Yokohama Subtropical Teahouse, located in Naka Ward, customers are able to observe 40 different reptiles from around a dozen different species kept in tanks and cages, including a 1-meter-long lizard and a 1.7-meter-long snake.
The establishment has given a new twist to the trend of cafes showcasing animals, though they are usually more cuddly, like cats or rabbits.

He’s small, blue and now along with his creator Fujiko F. Fujio, Doraemon has his own museum. The fabulously popular Japanese cartoon character can now always be found on the outskirts of Tokyo. Let’s pay him a visit.
During a media preview day on Monday, journalists viewed the 50-thousand-item collection, 150 of which are on permanent display.
Cartoon creator Fujio passed away in 1996, but his widow Masako Fujimoto said Doraemon transcends culture and language making him popular with children worldwide.
Masako Fujimoto, wife of Fujiko F. Fujio, said, “I personally believe that the very fact that children from all over the world read and enjoy Doraemon is a testament to the fact that children are children no matter where they are.”
Doraemon’s cartoon series has been translated into over 30 languages and still enjoys popularity in many countries and regions.
Although Fujio is most well-known for creating the duo of cat-from-the-future Doraemon and Nobita, the museum also showcases his other works including Obake no Q-taro and others.
The Doraemon character was selected as a cartoon cultural ambassador for Japan in 2008 to promote Japanese culture overseas.
The museum opens to the public on September 3rd.

The quality of the soybean milk at KFC was called into question. So were the burgers at McDonald‘s and the soup at Ajisen Ramen, a popular Japanese noodle shop.
Food safety was an issue in just one of these cases. The other two involved marketing claims and whether consumers thought the products were as good as advertised.
But people can be unforgiving because food safety is such an important issue.
KFC acknowledged on its website on July 29 that its soy milk is made from powder. But it also said the powder‘s Chinese producers follow KFC‘s special recipe, which makes sure the milk tastes similar to milk from freshly ground soybeans.
On Thursday, Beijing‘s health authorities announced that they had inspected KFC‘s 254 restaurants in the capital. They determined that the soy milk KFC sells is not made from freshly ground beans, but it is safe.

Yao, who will turn 31 in September, averaged 19 points and 9.2 rebounds and has been named to the NBA All-star team eight times.
Apart from his on-court performance, Yao’s achievements off the court made him a phenomenen more than a player.

China has enacted a new rule to ban smoking in enclosed public spaces. The new rule will take effect on May 1 and has been added to the revised regulations on health management in public places from the country’s Ministry of Health.
The revised regulations also stipulate that business owners with public places should put up non-smoking signs, carry out promotional activities to warn people of the danger of smoking and dispatch personnel to dissuade smokers.
Furthermore, the smoking area in outdoor locations should not occupy people’s paths and cigarette vending machines should be excluded from public places. However, the new rule does not list any penalty provisions for violators, which arouses doubts over how the new legislation will be implemented.
