Quake children enjoy time with Brazilian cartoonist

Twelve children from Project Hope schools in earthquake-devastated Ya’an and Guangyuan in Sichuan Province were invited to the Brazil Pavilion this afternoon, where famed Brazilian cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa taught them how to draw.

They spent a happy afternoon with Sousa and followed his instruction to draw their own pictures. They also received comic books and souvenirs from the Brazilian artist.

Born in October 1935, Sousa has created more than 200 characters for his popular series of children’s comic books. He started his work as a newspaper reporter and quit that job to pursue a career in comic drawing in 1959. He created Turma da Monica (“Monica’s Gang”), one of his most famous characters. Sousa’s characters were inspired by children he knew from his childhood and by his own children.

His books have been translated into more than 50 languages, including Chinese, and over one billion of his books have been sold to date.
