Road Names

In Beijing—and other large cities in China—street signs simply provide the Chinese Characters and pinyin. It may not be English, but pinyin is readily legible to most Western eyes.

Shanghai has to be different, and enters the fray with a confounding system of English translations to street names, further confused by variant spellings and the absence of an overall standard. It’s quite possible to see 淮海中路transliterated as Huai Hai Zhong Lu. To further addle visitors, you may still see old English trans literations (eg Hwashan RD). In this book, we have listed street names as they appear on street signs.
