Located at the east foot of Xishan Mountain in Beijing, the Xiangshan Mountain is one of the famous sites to view maples in China. The scenic spot Fragrant Mountain Red Leaves, one of the four most famous sites to view maples in China, is located in the well-known Fragrant Mountain Forest Park of Beijing. The best season for sightseeing in the mountain is from mid-October to the first ten days of November. During this time, thousands of hectares of maple leaves are so red that you would mistake them for fallen petals if looking from a further area.

The Double Seventh Festival, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, is a traditional festival full of romance. It often goes into August in the Gregorian calendar.

This festival is in mid-summer when the weather is warm and the grass and trees reveal their luxurious greens. At night when the sky is dotted with stars, and people can see the Milky Way spanning from the north to the south. On each bank of it is a bright star, which see each other from afar. They are the Cowherd and Weaver Maid, and about them there is a beautiful love story passed down from generation to generation.

Long, long ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Niu Lang (Cowhand). His parents died when he was a child. Later he was driven out of his home by his sister-in-law. So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming. One day, a fairy from heaven Zhi Nu (Weaver Maid) fell in love with him and came down secretly to earth and married him. The cowhand farmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wove at home. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back.

With the help of celestial cattle, the Cowhand flew to heaven with his son and daughter. At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowy river appeared in front of the Cowhand. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called “Qi Xi” (Double Seventh).

Scholars have shown the Double Seventh Festival originated from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD220). Historical documents from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD371-420) mention the festival, while records from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) depict the grand evening banquet of Emperor Taizong and his concubines. By the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1279-1368) dynasties, special articles for the “Qi Xi” were seen being sold on markets in the capital. The bustling markets demonstrated the significance of the festival.

Today some traditional customs are still observed in rural areas of China, but have been weakened or diluted in urban cities. However, the legend of the Cowhand and Weaver Maid has taken root in the hearts of the people. In recent years, in particular, urban youths have celebrated it as Valentine’s Day in China. As a result, owners of flower shops, bars and stores are full of joy as they sell more commodities for love.

Green tea is the variety that keeps the original color of the tealeaves without fermentation during processing. This category consists mainly of Longjing tea of Zhejiang Province, Maofeng of Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province and Biluochun produced in Jiangsu.Green Tea is the most natural of all Chinese teaclasses. It’s picked, naturally dried, and then fried briefly (a process called “killing the green”) to get rid of its grassy smell. Green Tea has the most medical value and the least caffeine content of all Chinese tea classes. Aroma is medium to high, and flavor is light to medium. About 50% of China’s teas are Green tea.

China can be visited through out the year because of the stretch of its territories and sites and activities it can offer. Deciding when to visit China depends on which places you wish to visit, what type of weather you enjoy, and how much a bargain you want.

China is a huge country with many different climates and types of landscape. Think of it in terms of the United States, which China resembles in size and shape. Traveling along the Golden Route (Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Guilin) is like visiting New York, Chicago, Santa Fe, and Jacksonville, Florida all in one trip.

April, May, September and October are the peak tourist months at China’s most popular destinations when the weather is the most comfortable. Prices drop a bit in the shoulder season, which runs from November through March and from June through August. However, the winter months are peak season for trips to China’s Hainan Island and to the Northeast Harbin for its world-famous ice-lantern festival. This months are also packed with New Year holidays, Chinese Spring Festival and other national or local happy fairs. Summer months are great time to explore China’s Far East-Manchuria.

China has a continental and seasonal climate. Most parts are in the temperate zone but southern areas are in the tropical or subtropical zone while northern areas are in the frigid zone. Climates in different areas are complicated. For instance, northern Heilongjiang Province has a winter climate the year round without summer, while Hainan Island has a summer climate the year round without winter. The following is a reference table for tourists to prepare clothing on their trips.

Spring: 10-22°C, Western suits, jackets, sports coats, woolen jackets, long sleeve shirts and travel shoes.

Summer: 22°C and above, T-shirts, short sleeve shirts, skirts, sandals, caps, rain wear.

Autumn: 10-22°C, Western suits, jackets, sports coats, light woolen sweaters, rain wear and travel shoes.

Winter: 10°C or lower, overcoat, cotton clothes, lined coats. In very cold areas a cap, gloves and cotton-padded shoes are required.

As a moral or health concern, vegetarianism is not big in carnivorous Shanghai and is largely the preserve of conscientious Buddhists. If you eschew all meat, ordering vegetable dishes from standard restaurants may not guarantee a flesh-free meal, but if you want to be sure what’s pinched between your chopsticks, dine at the following. The elegantly refurbished Buddhist Gongdelin delivers a fine fleshless menu in a civilised ambience with spirtual overtones. Avoid accidentally ordering phoenix claws or duch’s neck at Zaozishu.

Gongdelin–Chinese vegetarian

The podgy effigy of Milefo and the faint aroma of temple incense hint at the Buddhist creed of this elegantly refitted vegetarian restaurant, housed in a red-brick bulding dating from 1922. The fleshiess food-served in a graceful environment of stone flagging and water features-delivers shots of good karma and energisting meat-free calories.

If it seems more crowded on buses and subways this morning, there’s a good reason: the first public preview of the Shanghai World Expo kicks off at 9am.

It’s the first of six previews and they are meant to be as much a test of the city’s public transport systems as of the workings of the World Expo itself.

Some 1.25 million visitors are expected at the previews, and everyone has been encouraged to take mass transit.

The trials will run from 9am to 6pm each day, with no one being admitted onto the site after 4pm. At least 70 percent of the pavilions should be open, as well as the Expo’s five permanent buildings: the China Pavilion, the Expo Boulevard, the Expo Center, the Theme Pavilion and the Expo Culture Center.

Visitors will be able to use all the infrastructure facilities, enjoy business services, and watch certain performances such as Expo parades.

There are eight gates to the Expo site by land, one underground and four by water.

People can choose one of the five Metro lines – Line 4, 7, 6, 8 and 13. Metro Line 13 is a special line that operates only for the Expo site; people can get the train from the Madang Road Station, transferring from Line 9. No Metro ticket will be needed at that point, just an Expo ticket.

Thirty-six bus routes will be taking visitors to the site. People can get on at the Shanghai and Shanghai South railway stations, Shanghai Stadium, Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao transport hub.

You can also take an Expo taxi, one of the 4,000 new cars that have exclusive rights.

But don’t try to drive to the Expo site. There is no parking lot for private vehicles.

Boats to the Expo site can be boarded on the Huangpu River at Shiliupu, Dongchang Road, Qinhuangdao Road and Qichangzhan.

The trials will also test security and volunteer arrangements and see how all the preparations check out.

The six trial operations will be held today, tomorrow and Friday through Monday.

The Expo site will welcome the most visitors, about 500,000, on Sunday.
