China Climate and Weather

China covers extensive territory and has a complex topography; therefore the weather differs from region to region. The southeast, below the Nanling Mountains, tends to be very wet with high temperatures all year round. In the central Yangtze and Huaihe River valleys there are four distinct seasons with very hot summers and extremely cold winters, and rain all year round. The dry north experiences a short but sunny summer, with long bitterly cold winters. The coast is humid and experiences monsoons during summer.Spring: 10-22ˇăC, Western suits, jackets, sports coats, woolen jackets, long sleeve shirts and travel shoes.Summer: 22ˇăC and above, T-shirts, short sleeve shirts, skirts, sandals, caps, rain wear. Autumn: 10-22ˇăC, Western suits, jackets, sports coats, light woolen sweaters, rain wear and travel shoes. Winter: 10ˇăC or lower, overcoat, cotton clothes, lined coats. In very cold areas a cap, gloves and cotton-padded shoes are required.

Ideal Times to Visit Northern China
Ideal times to visit northern China are spring and autumn when the days can be pleasantly warm but the nights very chilly.
Main Northern China Cities: Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Tianjin, Harbin,
Ideal Times to Visit Central China:
Autumn is probably your best bet in central China. Spring can be difficult with an occasional long winter or early wet season, although mid-April through mid-May are usually very nice. It is not yet terribly hot, flowers are blooming and the trees are starting to leaf out, so there's an air of freshness. However, autumn usually sees clearer skies, still warm temperatures without the overbearing humidity. And, you're less likely to get rained on.
Main Central China Cites:
Shanghai, Xi'an, Wuhan, Chongching, Nanjing, Luoyang, Zhengzhou,
Ideal Times to Visit Southern China:
Like central China, there's probably no ideal time but again, your best bet will be autumn for breaks in heat and humidity. There's always a chance of rain, though, so bring the right rain gear.
Main Northwest China Cities:
Xingjian Province (Urumuqi, Turpan), Gansu Province (Lanzhou), Qinghai Province (Golmud), basically the stops along the Silk Road
Ideal Times to Visit Tibet:

As with northwestern China, the ideal time to visit Tibet is from April to the beginning of November.
